When I found myself suddenly single with 2 small children, I had to think hard about gifts. I had no money. I started what we call an envelope Christmas I made the kids an envelope for every week of the year. Each week they got to open an envelope, which contained something special they got to do with me. It cost very little. It was just time together. Baking, going to the park, etc. Now my kids are in their 20s and still call to make sure they’re going to get their envelopes! Now they get one a month. They include anything from a home cooked meal, to a girls’ day out.
It’s time to get rid of that disgusting, dirty, crumb-infested backpack that your teen has been carrying for four years. Great options from standard-bearers like Jansport or North Face start at $30, while trendier brands like Herschel or FjallRaven can run north of $150. Just remember that whatever you buy will be disgusting, dirty, and crumb-infested four years from now.
This fan from Vornado helps cool things down while looking ultra cool, and also tunning out noisy neighbors. It’s got a hip, retro feel, designed after the original Vornado Fan from 1945. This one is compact though, measuring just 11.4" x 10.1" x 6.1", so it’s great for small spaces like dorm rooms and apartments. Stylish and functional, it features two-speed settings and a rotating head, and it comes with a five-year warranty.

This is another one of those nice-to-have items that almost no one buys for themselves. Most of us have our keys attached to a keychain from a now-defunct bank from 1998, or from our dentist, or from whatever commercial enterprise thrust one into our hands as we left their establishment at some point in a foggy, distant past. A nice, light keychain is an easy way to spruce up anyone’s daily routine.
You want your kids to heed wise parental advice, but you’re not there to nag them about cleaning their clothes. Solution: a copy of “Do Your Laundry Or You’ll Die Alone.” This beautiful, clever little book by Becky Blades includes 270 wise, wry gems of parental advice, like “You can tell a lot about a man by the way he treats the server at Applebees.” (The newer hardback version is available for $9.29 on Amazon.)

It's nearly impossible to pinpoint the moment that your darlingest little pile of snot and tears who used to cling to your sleeve grew up to be a reasonable, responsible person. And now look! It's time for college. Of course, no student would ever turn down cash or gift cards, but sometimes you want to gift something more substantial and immediately practical when your child heads to school. The rules of giving to a college student living in a dorm or shared space are a little different than giving to anyone else. Keep in mind that items should be consumable or easily portable--whatever gets hauled in needs to be hauled out upon departure. You also don't want to take up too much room. So a popcorn popper with only one function is a waste of space; a microwave or good saucepan with a lid that can perform nightly on multiple items is much better option.
Or maybe you're the one hoping to get that unique Christmas present? If so, you'll find some great tools to help drop subtle, or not so subtle, hints to your loved ones. Find something you want but need help getting the idea across? Try using our share button to let your special someone know exactly what it is you're longing for. Or with the same click tell the entire social media world?just because.

45. Video Game Console—Does the college student you are shopping for love to game? He or she would probably enjoy a new gaming system like a Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, Microsoft Xbox 360, or Nintendo Switch. These units connect to the Internet so that users can game with friends remotely as well as access web and video services like Netflix and YouTube.

Excited to start Christmas shopping? Or silently freaking out? We get it—sometimes it seems like the longer the list, the less fun holiday shopping can be. But these cheap Christmas gifts prove that fabulous presents can come with small price tags. After all, buying thoughtful items for the people in your life shouldn’t break your budget. That’s why everything here is $25 or less (in some cases much less), so you can find incredible, inexpensive Christmas gifts for everyone from your best friend to your boyfriend’s mom.

My wife and I have had this coffee maker for a month, and we love it. Well, we love HALF of it -- the left half. We've probably made more than 100 cups of coffee on the single-serve side, and every single one has been terrific, with better taste than one typically gets from making a full pot of coffee. And with the single-serve side, we're actually using LESS coffee than we were using with our previous coffee maker, which was a standard "carafe" style coffee maker. (In fact, we're using about HALF as much coffee as we were using with the old coffee maker.) One of the issues that this coffee maker solves is that my wife likes lightly brewed flavored coffee, while I like dark-roast coffee that is brewed for hand-to-hand combat. ;-) This coffee maker works well in that type of environment.

Stumped on what to get the college-aged person in your life? Whether it’s a going away gift, a birthday present or something clutch for the holidays, a well-placed gift can go a long way toward keeping students focused, on-task and firmly un-homesick. That’s why we put together this gift guide for the university gang, including everything from an all-purpose backpack to a laptop that does just about everything (except get them a 4.0, they'll have to do that on their own).
Spikeball has hit college campuses hard, but if your collegian does not have a set, this is a fun, inexpensive, active game to take back to campus. With four players (2 vs. 2), one net, and one tennis-size ball, the game can be played in any small patch of grass and stores easily under a bed. Kid already has Spikeball? Try KanJam for the same four players but this time substitute a Frisbee for a ball and a can for a net.

They say the way to a man’s heart is food, so why not make him his favorite meal for a romantic date over Christmas break? This is the perfect chance to make your favorite recipe or show him how you pay attention to what he orders at your favorite restaurant. You can both save some money and bond over chopping carrots. The real question is whether or not you let him bustle around next to the warm oven alongside you or surprise him when he walks in the door with the aroma of an already prepared meal.
I also docked the mirror because it isn't obvious how to work the suction cup mechanism. I had to watch the very informative video on how to do it. Ideally it would have been obvious without the video. I will say this, the suction holds quite well, and hasn't fallen off yet! That's especially important because the only surface suitable for the mirror to stick to is the inside of the glass shower door. I have to move the door (and the mirror) to get into and out of the shower. The mirror hasn't budged, and I haven't had to reapply the suction cup to the door at all. Good job!
I’ve included some edible items, as well as a bunch of great gifts you can make and give to almost anyone. We’ve all experienced that (super awkward!) moment when someone unexpectedly gives us a gift…and we didn’t get them anything. So, having a few extra Christmas gifts on-hand will save you from scrambling or running out to the store and throwing money at a last-minute purchase.
Here is a compilation of tips, tricks, hints and advice for the college bound student. For example, did you know that instead of taking a shower and cleaning up their dorm room they can spread dry tea bags around to absorb the odor? Or instead of keeping their shoes off the coffee table they can use oil and vinegar to get the scratches out. There are lots of useful ideas in here that can help one navigate through these challenging years of academics and hygiene.
