For picnics on the quad, summertime camping trips, or even just watching flicks in the common room, the rumpl blanket is a cross between a sleeping bag and a duvet — a.k.a. a must-have for any adventure. The match-everything design will look just as at home thrown over a dorm bed or right beside a campfire, plus, it folds up to roughly the size of a basketball.

I often give homemade gifts for Christmas. I make homemade biscotti- almond or chocolate dried cherry and also include homemade hot cocoa mix or Russian tea mix. I have made homemade butterscotch and hot fudge sauce and given them in nice mason jars as gifts. Very cheap to do- buy butter, sugar and cream at Aldi’s. Everyone raves. I have also given wonderful scented soap that I carry home from Florida every year. I have also made Lebkuchen and strudel for gifts. My kids always get lip balm, a toothbrush and a movie pass in their stockings’ – it is a Chrismas tradition. I also go to resale shops and find really neat cookbooks for my daughter. They aren’t high priced and I am recycling them to another cook. I shopped at Sahalie last Christmas and got my DD and DDIL beautiful gloves for ten dollars each- free shipping and no tax!I like to give something that can be used and not end up on the table at the garage sale in a few years.

When the Amazon Echo made its debut, it seemed like a great idea. But the large, expensive gadget was not a great fit for college students. At $49.99 (Amazon Prime) and the size of a small clock radio, the Echo Dot is a much better buy. With voice activation, the Echo Dot can order an Uber, wake you up, get sports scores or the weather, answer your factual questions, and read you an audiobook or podcast. Not surprisingly, it can order anything from Amazon Prime. For college kids feeling particularly lazy, the Dot can do conversions and answer simple math questions shouted from across the room.

The leggings and a tee uniform she wore to those afternoon classes isn’t going to cut it for her new corporate gig. Send her off and into the real world with this smart styling service. She’ll fill out a style questionnaire and be matched with a personal stylist, who will send her an assortment of items to choose from. Give a gift card to cover what she decided to keep.
Admit it, you always secretly hoped they’d grow up to be Amish. But you knew if you ever brought it up directly they’d just dig their heels in. Subtly nudge them in that direction by giving them a non-electric washing machine. The operation is surprisingly fast and easy and they’ll save on both electricity and trips to the laundromat. Great for emergency spills and stains.
“Wedding registry–type things make sense,” adds Cassidy Olsen, another soon-to-be graduate of Tufts, “because a lot of us are moving into places for the first time permanently. I know nothing about glassware, so I couldn’t say what glassware, but a combo of drinking glasses and wine glasses would be good.” We here at the Strategist love the Bormioli Rocco Bodega short tumblers, which do double duty as wine glasses and drinkware.
Headphones  JLab FitSport Earbuds  or  Skullcandy Method Sports Performance Earbud  – Recommended by Runner’s World magazine, these are two lighter and less expensive headphones that would be great to use when working out.   Casper Mattress Three of our five kids moved into first apartments this fall and ordered Casper mattresses which they really, really like. And now, the company has added sheets (including twin XL) pillows and bedroom furniture.  With excellent customer service, free shipping and a generous return policy, the mattress comes compressed in a box and delivered at the front door. Our readers can take $50 off  The Casper and Wave mattresses using the code GROWNANDFLOWN
Power cords may be very modern, but these leather wraps are a throwback to a much earlier era. Combining what our kids love, tech and the big trend towards natural materials, this set of wraps will keep cords from traveling in a large tangled mess. Given that our kids carry their laptops, phones, tablets, and the necessary array of cords everywhere they go, these will be used every day.

It's nearly impossible to pinpoint the moment that your darlingest little pile of snot and tears who used to cling to your sleeve grew up to be a reasonable, responsible person. And now look! It's time for college. Of course, no student would ever turn down cash or gift cards, but sometimes you want to gift something more substantial and immediately practical when your child heads to school. The rules of giving to a college student living in a dorm or shared space are a little different than giving to anyone else. Keep in mind that items should be consumable or easily portable--whatever gets hauled in needs to be hauled out upon departure. You also don't want to take up too much room. So a popcorn popper with only one function is a waste of space; a microwave or good saucepan with a lid that can perform nightly on multiple items is much better option.
Kids are taking over the kitchen! Deanna F. Cook presents more than 50 recipes designed for the cooking abilities and tastes of children ages 6 to 12. Basic cooking techniques are explained in kid-friendly language, and recipes include favorites like applesauce, French toast, popcorn chicken, pizza, and more. Full of fresh, healthy ingredients and featuring imaginative presentations like egg mice, fruit flowers, and mashed potato clouds, Cooking Class brings inspiration and confidence to the chefs of the future.
They say the way to a man’s heart is food, so why not make him his favorite meal for a romantic date over Christmas break? This is the perfect chance to make your favorite recipe or show him how you pay attention to what he orders at your favorite restaurant. You can both save some money and bond over chopping carrots. The real question is whether or not you let him bustle around next to the warm oven alongside you or surprise him when he walks in the door with the aroma of an already prepared meal.
Too often cheap presents get confused with "throwaway gifts" or generally poor choices, but there are so many options to buy on a budget that aren't destined to be re-gifted or immediately donated. Ahead, 25 of the best gifts to shop this season that they'll actually use, most well under $25 (because you know you've got to save up for all those post-holiday sales, anyways).

Street style is a source of endless inspiration, and this book, which highlights fashionable women in New York, Paris, Melbourne, Tokyo, Madrid, and London, is full of ideas. For teens, perhaps the most important lesson of this book is that style is individual, and expressing yourself and doing your own thing is always cooler than following the crowd.

Does your boyfriend love solving puzzles? Instead of getting a puzzle with dolphins or cars, reach for a more heartfelt gift. Putting your picture on it through websites like Shutterfly makes the personal gift even more special. “I made a collage of us in puzzle form,” said Betty Straub, a junior at Creighton University. “We put it together with each other and it was so much fun.” Say hello to the ultimate date-night activity, paired with a bottle of wine.
We got my brother a water bottle, and he was so excited! HydroFlask is a popular brand, but it’s pricey! We LOVE the Simple Modern brand of water bottle. It keeps the water really cold (and your ice sticks around for a long time), but they are half the price. I have the 64-ounce bottle, but there are different ones in a variety of sizes. The HydroFlask lids do fit on them. I bought one of the HydroFlask straw lids, because I prefer that for drinking out of my bottle.
This is such a fun DIY gift list! I especially love the boho chic jewelry trays and the birch tree art. It can be hard for me to think of a gift that anyone would like, and home decor is a great idea I hadn’t really thought of. This year, my side of the family is going to try $15 or less gifts for each other–something that will be hard to do without trying to make them instead of buy them. Thanks for the ideas!
For the guy you're always trying new restaurants with, you can make a personalized Food Map with the restaurants you want to try together and include a little certificate offering to pay for a meal of his choice! Create a map on Google maps, save all of the restaurants near campus or home that you want to go to together and some of your old favorites, and then print it out. Add on some cute stickers, throw it in a frame, get creative!

This mirror is great! I use it for shaving every time I take a shower. It stays relatively fog free, I just take my detachable shower head and spray the face and back of the mirror with hot water right before I start shaving. I have noticed it will still fog up from my breath, which is why I docked it a star, but that only happens when I try to get close to the mirror near the end of my shave.
44. Amazon Echo—Surprise the student in your life with a multimedia voice-activated speaker. The Amazon Echo plays all of his or her music from popular sites and apps like Prime Music and Spotify. It can also look up information to answer questions, provide the weather, and report the news. And it can even call for an Uber ride, order pizza, and control home features like lights and thermostats.
43. Smart TV—Make a college student's day by giving him or her a smart TV. These units can connect to the Internet so that a person can directly access Netflix and video-on-demand services as well as social networking and other websites. Some TVs are also capable of instant messaging and video calling. Depending on how much you want to spend, there are many cool features available.
If there was one thing I often went without in college, it was new clothes. I loved getting new clothes, but I couldn’t always justify the expense. Most college students will be THRILLED with any type of clothing. Stitch Fix is one of my favorite creative ideas for a college student – you can give them a gift card to get styled. Stitch Fix sends you a box of personally curated clothes for the recipient. It’s like having your own personal stylist!
20. Photo Book—If you are buying a gift for a college or university student who has moved away from family and friends to attend school, consider giving him or her a photo book. Companies like Picaboo, Shutterfly, and Walmart offer a large number of styles and designs. You just upload pictures and can make a custom photo book that is sure to bring a smile to a homesick college student's face. And it is a great keepsake that can be kept for years.

He shouldn't have to give much thought to where his essentials are when he's trying to catch an 8 a.m. train. This wall-mounted hallway organizer is the perfect spot for his keys, cell phone, and wallet, and when he gets home, he can drop off his mail here until he has time to sort through it — as he becomes all too familiar with the joys of bill-paying!
Buying the perfect gift often sounds like a lot of pressure. But it's all in the way you approach it. Look at who you're buying for. What are they always talking about? What are their hobbies? Connecting your present to something you already know they like is the easiest way to get them something you know they'll enjoy. From clothes and accessories to booze and tech gear, here's what to get him.

2. Shadow box. Many craft and frame stores offer "shadow boxes": a box that has one side made of glass (made to look like a frame) that you can hang on a wall. Create a special one tailored just for your graduate—with mementos, college insignia, and even sports paraphernalia, if appropriate. As an added bonus, shadow boxes work well in an office or in your graduate's new apartment.

Laptops are one of the most popular and useful gifts for graduating teens. Some college bookstores have deals that come with tech support but, before you make a final decision, see what student discounts you can get from Apple, Microsoft, and Best Buy. When shopping for laptops, or other items from national retailers, parents should be aware that they can generally use college student discounts even if their student does not yet have a college ID card. Retailers often ask for a college email address that many schools issue over the summer, and some will give discounts with a college acceptance letter. Consumer Reports recommends the Acer Spin 1 which retails for about $250. MacBooks with enough memory and computing power for undergraduates start at about $1,100.
I've been using Roku devices for many years starting with a Roku 2 XS. I'm not a fan of Apple products and want a neutral streaming device that covers all major streaming services so Roku was the natural choice. There have been software issues here and there over the years but they have been minor and swiftly dealt with. When the Roku 4 came out I bought it without question. Sure my Roku 3 is still running just fine but I'm a sucker for the latest and greatest. Just as I expected the Roku 4 is a little faster, doesn't crash, there are no software glitches and has the same simple and functional interface. Unfortunately I appear to be one of the few that received a less than quiet fan. I must admit that not having a fan was a huge plus on the previous units. Hopefully a future hardware revision will substitute with a larger heat sink or more energy efficient processor to eliminate that failure point. Luckily it turned out to be easy to upgrade the heat sink myself although not very... Read more
Spikeball has hit college campuses hard, but if your collegian does not have a set, this is a fun, inexpensive, active game to take back to campus. With four players (2 vs. 2), one net, and one tennis-size ball, the game can be played in any small patch of grass and stores easily under a bed. Kid already has Spikeball? Try KanJam for the same four players but this time substitute a Frisbee for a ball and a can for a net.
A cookbook is always a good gift for a beginner cook, and Amanda Cohen, chef and owner of Manhattan’s Dirt Candy, relied on this one when she was in college. “Will you ever cook from it? Well, I did when I was in university, and the approachable recipes were a great way to ease me into the kitchen,” she said, adding, “And for me, it’s almost like a scrapbook, reminding me of when I tried to make Gypsy Soup, of hours spent poring over the recipes for Vegetable and Walnut Pate, Stuffed Eggplant, and Lentil burgers, trying to figure out how to tweak these dishes to make them better, learning from what they were doing, and slowly, page by page, without even knowing it, becoming a chef.”
